Croatia
No one can resist a European getaway. But why not swap out the hustle and bustle of London or Paris for something a little more off the beaten path? In Split, Croatia you can do just that. Split, the largest and one of the oldest cities along the Dalmatian Coast, is the perfect place to escape. Boasting some of the most beautiful beaches of the Mediterranean Basin and quaint cobblestone alleyways, Split and the surrounding islands are a must-see for any European jetsetter.
The splendor of Split blends the charm of a small beach town with the cosmopolitan nightlife of a major city. This is no shabby seashore; instead, the landscape of Split is sprinkled with breathtaking beaches, palm trees and seaside promenades. When you’re not relaxing on the beach or meandering through the ancient streets checking out the local markets, there are plenty of islands to check out nearby. Take a boat for a day and sail through the Adriatic Sea, stopping at the alluring little islands scattered throughout the coast, or explore the stunning natural beauty of the waterfalls at Krka National Park. And while you’re de-stressing, be sure to indulge in some of the local cuisine. Croatian dishes are a distinct fusion between neighboring cultures: Greek, Italian, Turkish and Hungarian. The best part? The seafood is always fresh, from salmon to shellfish, brought in daily off the shore.
Croatia is truly one of Europe’s most underrated gems. The locals are as kind-hearted and welcoming, sincerely wanting you to love their country as much as they do. The country’s natural beauty is unrivaled by any European capital, making it the ideal destination for some serious sightseeing. So if you’re looking to weave a little R&R into your next global adventure, give Croatia a try.
As an art history major with a focus on Italian Renaissance and Baroque, I have always appreciated the paintings of Italian women frolicking in the Roman Baths. New York City has always had bathing spas but none as elegant as the new Aire Ancient Baths on Franklin Street in TriBeCa.
From the moment you step through the doors of Aire, you enter a state of relaxation and meditation. The soaring 15-foot ceilings, exposed brick walls, walnut floors and white slipcovered chairs and sofas provide an inviting and modern atmosphere. The baths, located one story below ground level, have a grotto-like setting with flickering candles and soft music.
Aire is a co-ed experience, ideal for couples, girls’ nights, big groups or even some personal “me” time. There are six baths available, each one different from the next, ranging from cool to tepid to extremely hot temperatures. My favorite was the salt water experience as it transported me back centuries and reminded me of floating in the Dead Sea. In between plunges, you can rest upon the heated marble slabs.
The bath experience is $75 per person for 90 minutes and there are add-on spa services which include massages and body wraps. Aire is a place I am longing to return to no matter what time of year for its sense of history, serenity and peace.
