Frank Buchwald

Frank Buchwald studied design at the University of the Arts in Berlin and it is here that his studio now resides. A former freelance painter and illustrator, Buchwald progressed into designing and manufacturing furniture and “machine objects.” His light objects were begun in 2002.

While many forms of expression have been a source of inspiration, Buchwald stressed that art, architecture and natural forms all influenced his work, coming together to give his Machine Objects their techno-biological character. Then there is a love of machinery itself: “I am fascinated by the uncompromising functionality of machines, not concealed by a hull of pleasing design.”

Each light sculpture is one of a kind and hand crafted at Buchwald’s studio in Berlin. The Machine Light series comprises 12 different models produced in low volume production. Each object is manually produced from up to 200 individual parts. Steel and brass parts are burnished by hand, giving each light sculpture one-of-a-kind qualities that make it truly unique.
