Style Trends in the U.K.

by Karen Beauchamp

Cole & Son Wallpapers is known for its fresh sense of the latest styles in the U.K. Creative Director Karen Beauchamp suggests that recent U.K. designs tend to be comfortably, naturally and thoughtfully inspired.

Empathetic colors, soothing florals and calming looks and textures deriving from nature have found prominent expression. These trends have also garnered renewed interest in two different comforting influences: on one hand, flowers and other vital forms of plant life; on the other, libraries along with the books, shelves and furnishings that help to create the quiet soothing atmosphere of a personal sanctuary.

Designers and their clients are being especially thoughtful about their purchases. Taking extra care and consideration in what they select, they keep their eyes open for products of lasting quality, extraordinary beauty, and unusual power. In challenging times, they are making purchases that will have abiding relevance. They seek an attractiveness and richness that is elegant instead of showy.

These patterns have also kindled interest in the sophisticated recycling of hand-crafted materials through knitting, gardening and remodeling. Designs tend to encourage the warmth of familiarity and reintegration. Many designers and clients have embraced the ‘Do It Yourself’ approach. They have found that the introduction of a fresh and complementary wallpaper into an existing design scheme is one way of renewing a room.
